INVESTING WITH MIKE WITTLIN PRODUCTIONS
Deciding to invest in a motion picture is never a decision to go into lightly. There are many factors to consider and things to be aware of before taking the leap. As an Independent Film Company we are always happy to entertain perspective investors, but ask that you consider the information below before contacting us to get more detailed information:
- You need to be comfortable with the profit model of the specific motion picture to be produced.
- At Mike Wittlin Productions our model is to make high quality (production value) movies, at a budget in the 2-7 million dollar range. As our company is made up of experienced and respected crew, we are able to capture top talent to appear in the film while maintaining our high standards of filmmaking.
- By keeping our budgets in this range we are able to achieve profits in all scenarios: theatrical release, straight to DVD, etc. In fact, a movie that would be considered a failure for a studio will normally provide a tidy profit for our investors.
- As investors ourselves we respect the money. In every motion picture we produce, every dollar we make on the movie goes directly to the investors until they have received every penny of investment back plus a return on the money. At that point our profit sharing kicks in, and we become Partners. We have high incentive to make sure that the initial investment is recouped as quickly as possible so we are part of the profit picture.
- Distribution – Without a plan for the ultimate distribution of the film the risk level is too high. At Mike Wittlin Productions we have relationships with major distribution resources in both the foreign and domestic markets. Because of this, the end strategy of releasing the movies is addressed before we spend the first dollar.
- Tax Incentives, Tax Credits, Grants
- While our model of investing provides the highest degree of control and end profits, there are sound tax reasons that make motion pictures an attractive investment. Currently every dollar invested in motion pictures in the US market that qualify (as we do not give tax advice we ask that you check with a qualified CPA to verify any tax incentives) under the Jobs Creation Program can be 100% written off in the same year the money is spent. So even though our motion pictures are optimized to make profits, it is a nice incentive to have that right-off in the same year you invest.
- Many states offer attractive tax credits or grant programs as an incentive to attract motion pictures, allowing their region to experience the related economic boost from the business generated by the production. We look for the area that makes the most sense to shoot in, and then use these incentives to reduce the exposure of the Investor.
- The Project
- While it is important to realize that we are appealing to a world-wide audience and your specific tastes are not always what is going to have universal appeal, we do feel, however, the work should appeal to your sensibilities and be a project with which you will be proud to be associated.
- Timing
- Investing in motion pictures is meant for capital that can be tied up for a period of 10 -15 months before seeing a return. Even if the picture is sold prior to that time, we need that much time to have the project completed and ready for delivery.
- Investing in motion pictures is very well suited for people who have an interest in the excitement and glamour of Hollywood. Your investment opens up access to a new world of social and business opportunities, and, while the intriguing part is the investment, you will find this can be the most fun you will have investing your money.
